Carretera Federal Libre La Paz Pichilingue Km 7.5 Local #52, Costa Baja, La Paz, Baja California Sur, MEXICO C.P.23019
After spending the summer feeding in Alaska, gray whales begin their incredible migration south to Baja California for the winter. They travel for 2-3 months to reach the warmer southern waters where they will mate and give birth from mid-January to end of March.
Large numbers of gray whales congregate in three specific bays along Baja's west coast: Laguna Ojo de Liebre, Laguna San Ignacio, and Bahia Magdalena. Saltier water, such as the water in these bays, make it easier for the newborn calves to maintain buoyancy, and the warm currents help keep them from getting too cold. As fellow mammals, gray whale calves are born live and nurse their mother's' milk, which is 50% fat (calves gain about 60 pounds per day from drinking it!).
Here, gray whales will sometimes swim near small skiffs and even allow humans to pet them. Please note that concern has grown about the impact of boat traffic around whales, and our boats' proximity to whales is limited.
